Navigating outside of a module - Student Guide

Once you're logged into Minerva, the black Global Navigation menu on the left-hand side gives you access to commonly used options. This peeks out from behind any other layer you have open whilst you work in Minerva, to make it easy to find.

Written Guide

The Global Navigation menu has options that give you a view across all your modules/organisations.

The Grades option will open a page showing you your grades across all your modules, whilst the Activity Stream will open a page showing you all of the activity across your modules/organisations. The Minerva messages page will show you which of your modules/organisations have messages.

Global Navigation menu

Let's take a look at each of the options available on the Global Navigation menu.

My Leeds

My Leeds is our home page for Minerva. Portal widgets and help links are broken down into sections, and each section is targeted at broad audiences so that you see the information most relevant to you. Where a topic has more than 5 links, the list can be expanded to show a larger selection of resources to the right (by clicking the Show All link).

Your Profile

Staff and students each have their own profile page. If you upload a profile picture it will display in Minerva Discussions, Journals, Messages, and the module enrolments page. This adds a personal touch and makes it easier for staff and your peers to identify you and to help to build a sense of community.

Click on your name to open your Profile page, this is where you can upload a profile picture.

Activity Stream

The Activity Stream page shows Minerva notifications, it is similar to a news feed for all your modules and organisations. These notifications include Announcements but also events such as when new content is added to a module. Clicking a notification item will take you directly to the content in a separate tab. You can also personalise the notification settings for your Activity Stream.

Modules

Modules are the route to your teaching spaces. Clicking Modules will open the Modules page, this displays a list of all the modules you are enrolled on. You can see the module code, module name and a link to a list of module staff.

By default, modules for the current year will display at the top, and you can scroll down to see modules from previous years. Use the back or forward arrows to focus on modules for a particular year. You can also favourite modules so that they always appear at the top.

You can change the Modules page from list view to grid view using the layout icons at the top.

Grid view displays the card view for your modules, if you switch to this view, Minerva will remember this for when you next log in.

Each of your modules will have a module thumbnail image by default. Click on a module card (in grid view) or module name (in list view) to open it.

Organisations

Clicking Organisations will open the Organisations page to show you a list of all the organisations you are enrolled on.

Organisations are displayed in the same way as modules though they are not associated with an academic year. You may be attached to a variety of organisations, including School, Programme or Faculty organisations.

Minerva Calendar

The Minerva Calendar displays upcoming dates across all your modules, you can see your schedule for the day, week or month to help you keep organised. The Minerva Calendar, rolls up all the information from each of your module calendars into one page to help you keep track. The Minerva Calendar is separate from your online Timetable (which is accessed via MyTimetable).

You also have the option of adding your own events (that only you will see in your Minerva Calendar).

Minerva Messages

Minerva Messages are different to Announcements which appear in the module/organisation and Activity Stream. Your tutor can use Messages to send you an individual message, or to send a message to a specific group of students.

Minerva Messages can be read by clicking Minerva Messages or from within a module by clicking the Messages tab. If you have new messages, this is indicated on the Global Navigation menu by a number in a white circle.

If you are on many modules, use the arrow above your list of modules/organisations to navigate by academic year.

Grades

If you see an Overall Grade/Current Grade in Minerva, please note, this is not necessarily an indication of your overall, final grade for the module.

In general, only graded work conducted through Minerva appears in the Gradebook. Grades and percentages may only be indicative of performance, and may not represent a final grade. Displayed Overall Grades would not include results for exams, for example.

Grades allows you to view your grades across all your modules/organisations (once your tutor has made them available for you to see) on one page, with key information from the Gradebook displayed.

If you are on many modules, use the arrow above your list of modules/organisations to navigate by academic year.

Your grades are organised by module name and term in alphabetical order. You can select a module name to go to the module's Gradebook, for more details.

Tools

Clicking on Tools will give you access to the module evaluation tool. Your tutor will advise you when you need to access this.
