What is the difference between an upgrade and an update?

An update involves making changes to software in a way that doesn’t affect its core structure. These are generally bug fixes, and other small improvements to bring the system up to date.

When a set of changes made to software are significant and substantial enough, we call it an upgrade. Both of them involve making changes to the software.
