Collaborating in Soundtrap
Soundtrap includes a number of features for collaborative recording and editing within your projects.
Sharing a Project
Before any group editing or recording can take place in Soundtrap, you first need to share your project with your group.
Inviting external guests
Guest accounts are available for users looking to collaborate or record with those outside their module. Soundtrap is a limited pilot, so this will also include others in the university outside of our pilot modules.
A number of guest accounts are available to provide temporary logins for any such circumstances. Please reach out to your Digital Education Systems team via the IT Service Desk. The number of guest accounts is limited - please include your module name, anyone else involved in your group and any assignment due dates. This helps ensure we keep your guest account access available for as long as needed.
We'll then create a new group to allow you collaborate with one of our guest accounts and provide you with login details. Provide these to your guest collaborator and follow the next steps for working within your module.
Sharing within your module
You will be automatically added to a group with the rest of your module when you receive your account details. Anyone within this group can invite other users to view, collaborate or comment on each others' projects. Only those you invite can see your work (this includes your module leader - follow this guidance if sharing with your teaching team as well).
Sharing permissions can be managed either via the Projects page, or within an project directly.
- From the Projects Page any existing project can be shared by selecting the Invite collaborators button which appears under the Owner column in your list of projects. A text field will allow you to search someone's name or email. Search then select each name you want to share with, then select Invite. They will receive an email notification as well as a link on top of their own project page allowing them to accept the invite to collaborate.
- From within a Project, the same invite options can be found via the Invite button in the top-right of the page, or by going via File > Share Project.

Collaborating in Soundtrap
Soundtrap includes a number of features to enable cooperative recording and editing within the platform. You can also record in another platform, such as Teams or Zoom and upload your file later for final edits.
Call Recording
Recording together offers the opportunity to add authenticity and personality to your work, and with the right preparation makes editing afterwards easier. Soundtrap offers the ability to call and record directly through their webapp via the Collaborators tab. Follow Soundtrap's guidance on Recording audio from video chat for recording together on separate channels.
If you'd prefer to use another app such as Teams or Zoom, you can always import your recording to Soundtrap to edit further as well.
Recording with an Audio Interface
Soundtrap should automatically recognise your devices microphone and headphones, and calibrate your devices when you first start recording. This also works with multiple devices such as through an audio interface and mixer. When plugging in a new device, check the settings for each track by selecting the microphone icon, then selecting the drop-down with the name of your recording device.
Multi-track recorders are available from the University through the HELIX recording booths or the Library Makerspace's Library of Things.
Comments and Tasks
Comments can be added throughout your project for collaborating, sharing workload and discussion. New comments can be added by clicking on the comment icon along the top timeline or by right-clicking within a clip. You can view, reply to, and resolve existing comments within the Comments Panel.

Note: New comments cannot curently be added solely with keyboard navigation; clicking anywhere in the comment timeline will reveal the comment icon allowing it to then be moved and edited with keyboard.
