Möbius Accessibility Statement

The University of Leeds is committed to making its digital estate accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Möbius Assessment is an online, automated assessment tool specifically designed to test students’ understanding of math-based concepts in STEM subjects. It can generate randomised parameters within numeric questions to give individualised problems to students. It can also handle the display and input of complex mathematical notation, questions and computations.

This statement applies to accessibility within the system itself, and does not cover uploaded course content. Additional relevant information may be highlighted in module-specific accessibility statements within Minerva. Accessibility statements for other integrated tools are available via the Accessibility Statements for Digital Education Systems page.

Compliance status

Möbius is partially compliant and has been designed and developed in accordance with the internationally standard Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below. DigitalEd, the Möbius vendor, has provided further accessibility information, including an Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) available via the DigitalEd website.

Accessibility within Möbius

Möbius supports the use of screen readers, keyboard and swipe navigation, and speech recognition software, except in specific question types outlined in the non-accessible content section of this statement. Adjustable browser settings for magnification are supported as well as colours, contrast and fonts.

Screen readers

Möbius works well with screen readers that support MathJax, such as JAWS and ChromeVox.

Keyboard navigation and shortcuts

Industry standard keyboard interactions are used throughout to move between menus, open menus, and select items within a menu. Keyboard navigation patterns differ between browsers such as Edge, Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. The interactions within any particular browser are common and consistent.

Maths support

Maths within Möbius is rendered using Mathjax, which is an accessible maths display and should be supported by all standard assistive technologies.

Non-accessible Content

Areas of non-compliance

Non-text Content

Images in certain question types (free body diagrams, sketching questions, clickable image questions) do not support alt text. The icon to indicate right/wrong when using “Verify question” also does not convey this information in other formats. This fails success criterion 1.1.1 Non-text Content (Level A).

Content-on-hover and Tooltips

The “Proctored Browser” help icon does not allow for full reading when zoomed in on some devices. Bell icon notifications in staff views also block content when zoomed or on smaller devices. This fails success criterion 1.4.13 Content on Hover or Focus (Level AA).

Keyboard

Information icons in policies shown at the start of assessments, and "Choose a type" question drop-down in free-body diagrams, cannot be navigated to by keyboard or screen reader  Sketching and Free-body diagram question types also do not support keyboard inputs. This fails success criterion 2.1.1 Keyboard (Level A)

Keyboard Trap

The symbolic mathematical editor tool traps keyboard focus. This fails success criteria 2.1.2 Keyboard Trap (Level A).

Pause, Stop, Hide

When timed assignments has or is close to running out of time, the timer display blinks for more than five seconds without a control to stop it. This fails success criterion 2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide (Level A).

Multiple Ways

Selecting the home icon will move a user to a list of enrolled modules with no way to return to an individual module. Students also cannot return to the review policies page once in an assignment. Both scenarios require a user to leave and relaunch Möbius. This fails success criterion 2.4.5 Multiple Ways (Level AA).

Focus Visible

Several buttons across the platform (such as “Toggling Entry Modes”) have styling that do not have enough contrast for the focus indicator to be visible. This fails success criterion 2.4.7 Focus Visible (Level AA).

Dragging Movements

Sorting questions do not have an alternative control option to mouse clicking and dragging. This fails success criterion 2.5.7 Dragging Movements (Level AA). We also note that pointer cancellation on these questions requires the item to be in the original location.

Label in Name

Some controls have differences in their visual and programatic name. This was identified in “Start” and “Cancel” button names starting with “btn”. This fails success criterion 2.5.3 Label in Name (Level A)

Status Messages

Time limit changes (such as when one minute is remaining) or when the time limit reaches the end are not announced as status changes to screen readers. This fails success criterion 4.1.3 Status Message (Level AA)

Advisory Issues

Non-text Content

In most contexts where alternative text is not supported, alternative forms of content can be provided by content creators, such as additional notes within slide presentation content. We recognise the additional burden on teaching staff and the above examples of non-compliance and will continue to work with vendors for more sustainable solutions.

Captions

Interactive narratives with audio do not support closed captions. As above, transcripts can be included as text items alongside such content types manually.

What we are doing about known issues

University of Leeds is committed to improving accessibility across all our sites. Where issues are identified we will work to warn users and provide alternatives, while working with our vendors to enact continuous improvements. Web accessibility statements are developed through testing within the Digital Education  in collaboration with University IT and
reviewed annually.

Preparation of the statement

This statement was prepared on 3rd November, 2025.

Auditing and testing was led by self-assessment from the Digital Education Systems Team. Testing is undertaken internally on desktop and mobile devices using NVDA, Voiceover and TalkBack screen readers, and WAVE and other browser-based accessibility tools in Chrome and Firefox.
