What are Notifications in StREAM@Leeds? - Student Guide

Notifications are a functionality in StREAM@Leeds used to flag students with no or low engagement with the digital education systems and resources that StREAM@Leeds collates usage data for. School Education Service (SES) staff who support digital engagement monitoring for their school have visibility of these Notifications and may then reach out to students to provide support and guidance. Students can see if they have triggered a Notification if they check their StREAM@Leeds Dashboard.

How Notifications are used

Notifications use Engagement Ratings to identify students with no or low engagement. For example, a Notification can be used to identify every student who has had Inactive (0) Engagement Ratings for 7 days as this would indicate that they have had zero engagement with digital education systems/resources during this time.

Engagement Ratings are calculated for each student based on how much they’ve interacted with key digital education systems. These ratings are:

  • Inactive (0)
  • Very Low (1)
  • Low (2)
  • Active (3)
  • High (4)
  • Very High (5)

While Engagement Ratings are calculated on a daily basis, they consider activity from the last 7 days for full-time students and the last 21 days for part-time students. This approach ensures that the ratings do not fluctuate dramatically from day to day.

The types of Notifications currently in use

The University of Leeds currently  uses two types of Notifications, these are set up by your school Student Education Service team:

1. No Digital Activity Notifications
  • For full-time students, this Notification will trigger if you do not interact with any of the digital education systems and resources that feed into StREAM@Leeds for seven consecutive days. 7 consecutive Inactive (0) Engagement Ratings will result in this Notification type triggering.
  • For part-time students, this Notification will trigger if you do not interact with any of the digital education systems and resources that feed into StREAM@Leeds for fourteen consecutive days. 14 consecutive Inactive (0) Engagement Ratings will result in this Notification type triggering.
2. Low Digital Activity Notifications
  • For full-time students, this Notification will trigger if your Engagement Ratings are at or below the selected threshold for seven consecutive days.
  • For part-time students, this Notification will trigger if your Engagement Ratings are at or below the selected threshold for fourteen consecutive days.

Most schools will set Notifications to trigger for Very Low (1) Digital Engagement, however some have opted to use Low (2) Engagement Ratings. This means you may see a Notification on your StREAM@Leeds Dashboard based on the following:

  • For full-time students:
    • Very Low: seven consecutive days with Inactive(0) or Very low (1) Engagement Ratings
    • Low: seven consecutive days with Inactive (0), Very Low (1) or Low (2) Engagement Ratings
  • For part-time students:
    • Very Low: fourteen consecutive days with Inactive(0) or Very low (1) Engagement Ratings
    • Low: fourteen consecutive days with Inactive (0), Very Low (1) or Low (2) Engagement Ratings

How can I tell if I've triggered a Notification?

You can see if you have triggered a Notification on your StREAM@Leeds Dashboard by looking at one of the following areas:

  • On the CURRENT ENGAGEMENT tab, a purple line and clock icon will appear on the Learning Journey map on the date when a Notification has been triggered,

  • On the INTERACTIONS tab, you will see a list of any Notifications you've received throughout your time at the University. The list shows the date you received the Notification and provides the name of the Notification. The name helps you to identify the type of Notification (No Digital Activity, Very Low Digital Activity or Low Digital Activity). The Notification will also include your faculty and school code.

What happens if I trigger a Notification?

As outlined above, you'll be able to see if you've triggered a Notification when you look at your StREAM@Leeds Dashboard, you may then want to reflect on your digital engagement.

You will not automatically be emailed or notified by the StREAM@Leeds system if you trigger a Notification. As part of the discussions around our use of StREAM@Leeds, a decision was made against automated system emails. This allows for more tailored support as part of the digital engagement monitoring process.

The team monitoring digital engagement monitoring for your school get a weekly update of all the Notifications that have been triggered. Staff in the team may then contact you to offer non-punitive support and guidance.

Can I trigger multiple Notifications in the same week?

You cannot trigger the same type of Notification in the same week, but you can trigger two different types of Notification in the same week. The most recent Notification triggered is said to be the most relevant.

Can I stop a Notification from triggering?

Staff who support the digital engagement monitoring process are able to apply an Exemption should there be a period where you're not expected to be engaging with digital education systems and resources to the same extent as others across the University. Examples of this include when you are may be on Practice Placement or have an Authorised Absence. Exemptions cannot be applied retrospectively and are generally applied to a group of students rather than individuals.

Notifications and Exemptions are set up and managed the Student Education Service Team within your school. If you have any questions about the Notifications or Exemptions displayed within your StREAM@Leeds Dashboard please contact your school's Student Education Service team.
