Practical tips for multi-mode delivery for teaching staff

Based on the multi-mode pilot evaluation report of 2021, here are some practical tips for teaching staff, to help improve the student experience when delivering and recording multi-mode sessions.

Check your audio

1. Carry out an audio test at the start of the session to ensure you can be heard by students that join the session online. Either use the lapel microphone or stand near to the lectern microphone. Be mindful of what is said at the front of the room before your session officially starts, as the microphones might already be on, and the session might have started streaming (or recording!).

Check your camera

2. Ensure you are captured by the camera by switching on the camera tracker on the multi-mode device. Think about where you want the camera to be focused – e.g., would a close-up of the lecturer be more useful than capturing the whole room?

3. Decide with your Multi-Mode Assistant whether to use the ‘click to track’ setting, which can be set to only track the lecturer rather than the person who is speaking. This will prevent the camera moving away from the lecturer.

Check your content

4. Ensure you share your slides with the audience your Teams / Zoom call, rather than just within the room for the in-person attendees. (You can double check this along with your audio test in the previous step.)

5. Use digital whiteboard over physical whiteboard wherever possible. (Online students find it easier to read the content on a digital whiteboard.)

Engaging your students

6. When in-room participants ask a question, repeat the question so that online students can hear it.

7. Ask your Multi-mode Assistant to introduce themselves in the chat so that online students know that they can access support via the chat if needed.

8. Engage large groups of students and ensure effective communication by using polling tools, e.g. Vevox.

9. For discussions and other group tasks, use breakout rooms. Assign only the online students to these breakout rooms to keep things simple and manageable
