Discussions and Conversations - what's the difference? - Staff Guide

Discussions and Conversations are different ways tutors can engage students in online conversations.

Discussions

Staff can create Discussions directly in the module content area alongside relevant content or they can be created directly in the Discussions area (accessed via the Navigation bar at the top of a module). Students and staff can post responses to the Discussions, if you wish you can also allow students to start Discussions. Discussions can be made available to all students on the module or by groups. Discussions can be graded.

Conversations

Conversations in Minerva allow students to discuss individual items. Tutors can turn on conversations for individual Documents, Blackboard Assignments and Tests. This gives students the opportunity to ask questions, share comments and develop discussions around these content items. An icon will appear in the course content if a new contribution to the Conversation is made. Conversations can only be accessed via the individual content item. Conversations cannot be graded.
