Add a MATLAB Grader problem/question - Staff Guide

To be able to add a MATLAB Grader problem to your Minerva module, the MATLAB Grader LTI 1.3 link must already have been added to your module. If you cannot see the MATLAB Grader link in your module, please first follow the steps outlined in Add MATLAB Grader to your Minerva module.

1. Log into Minerva and open your module.

2. Click the MATLAB Grader LTI 1.3 link in the Module Content area. If you cannot find it, check that it has not been given a new title by colleagues on your module team.

3. The Add Problem page should then load, select the option you require.

You can opt to:

  • add a blank problem
  • add a sample problem from MathWorks topics. When you choose from sample topics, this will open a list of related problems. Select show details... to expand any of the problems listed for more information. Click Copy to copy the problem you want to use. This will then load the problem page for you to start editing the problem.
  • add your MATLAB Grader problem by linking your MathWorks account
It is only possible to add one problem into a module. However, one problem can consist of multiple components. If you try to add a problem when you have already created one within your module, you will be advised that the problem you selected will replace the current problem. You can click Cancel if you do not wish for this to happen.

Add a Blank problem

When you select Blank Problem, this will open the problem page in draft view. Build your problem, click Set to Draft as you work to save your changes (scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the Set to Draft button).

Add a Sample Problem From Mathworks

For sample problems a banner at the top of the page will advise that the problem is saved as Final. To edit the problem you will need to change this to Set to Draft (this will also prevent students from seeing the problem). Scroll down to the bottom of the page to find and click the Set to Draft button. You can now edit the problem as required. Click Set to Draft to save your changes as you work.

Defining the assessment method of the problem

To change the weightings of a problem, scroll to the Assessment Method section of the page. There are two options to choose from, Correct/Incorrect and Weighted.

  • Correct/Incorrect: returns 1 if pass, 0 if fail.
  • Weighted: will let you add different weightings for each section. You assign to each test a relative point value, which is then converted into a percentage of the total. The assessment returns the total percentage for the passed tests, as a decimal value between 0.00 and 1.00.

Click Set to Draft as you work to save your changes. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to find and click the Set to Draft button.

Make a problem available to students (move from draft to final)

Once you are happy with your edits, with your problem open on screen, click the Save as Final button

Close the MATLAB Grader problem page, this will then take you back to your Minerva module. If your MATLAB Grader LTI 1.3 link is visible to students, they will be able to view the problem when they click the link.

The first time students click the MATLAB Grader LTI 1.3 link to access a problem, they are asked to agree to the MATLAB Terms of Use before they can proceed.
